FAQ on Leaves
As the spring season arrives it is once again time to rake up leaves and winter sand. Here are some guidelines to help you in this process:
  1. The Town does not provide any curbside collection of leaves, bags of leaves, etc.
  2. Leaves are also not acceptable for curbside collection with your trash.
  3. The Town does provide a leaf drop-off area for residents next to the Highway Garage on Industry Road (on the left after turning from Water Street). Leaves and winter sand from residents may be dropped off 24/7 in accordance with the following:
  1. Only unbagged leaves. If you use a bag for transport please empty the leaves from the bag.
  2. The drop off area is only for leaves, grass clippings, pine needles and similar yard waste.
  3. No brush, food or animal waste is accepted at the drop-off area. Brush and tree limbs must be taken to the Graham Road Landfill
  1. Town Ordinance prohibits the raking of leaves or debris into the street, gutter or ditch line. Please do not rake your leaves over the curb into the street or into our drainage ditches.
  2. Public Works recommends residents consider home composting of yard waste and literature is available upon request.

Common Recycling Questions
The following is a list of answers to the most frequently asked recycling questions we receive:
  • Driveway Sealer Container The plastic containers for driveway sealer are not recyclable due to the residue of sealer that remains in the container after use. Empty and dry driveway sealer containers must go in the trash after use of all product.
  • Wood items of any type are not recyclable under our curbside program, especially the small wood crates containing clementines sold at the supermarkets. Small items may be put in your trash and wood items are accepted for recycling at the landfill (there is a disposal charge).
  • Dog and cat food bags are not recyclable. They contain a film liner that makes them unacceptable under our current program. Please put these bags in the trash.
  • Please put recyclables in your blue box, a similar type container or a trash can providing it is clearly labeled as containing recycling. Recyclable items in plastic bags will not be collected as the plastic bag is not recyclable.
  • Styrofoam type materials are not recyclable even if they are stamped with the recycling chasing arrow symbol and number. Please put styrofoam items (including meat trays, certain coffee cups, preformed packaging pieces) in your trash.
  • Only metal cans are recyclable under our curbside program. If you have other metal items (appliances, car parts, curtain rods, metal lawn chairs, etc.) they can only be recycled at the landfill (there is a disposal charge).
  • Only plastic "containers" are recyclable under our curbside program. If you have plastic toys, plastic chairs or other plastic items they are not recyclable at this time and you can either put them in your trash or donate them to a local charity.
  • Only glass jars are recyclable under our program. If you have window glass, mirrors, dishes, etc., they will have to be disposed of at our landfill (disposal charge will apply).
  • Clothing items are not recyclable under our program. We recommend you give your clothing to Goodwill or charitable agency of your choice. Clothing may be disposed of at our landfill (disposal charge will apply).
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) contain mercury and may not be put in either the recycling or trash. A number of local stores will accept the bulbs for recycling. Please visit the www.efficiencymaine.com website for a complete listing of local stores.
  • Batteries must be disposed of based on the type:
    1. Rechargeable batteries must be recycled and not put in the trash. Brunswick has drop off boxes for rechargeable batteries at the landfill, Town Hall, Public Works and the library.
    2. Flashlight batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt, alkaline or non-alkaline) may be put in the trash. Years ago they contained mercury but that has long been discontinued in their manufacture and they may be safely put in the trash.
    3. Button batteries are deemed hazardous and need to be safely stored and brought to the Town's fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection program.
    4. Special lithium ion non-rechargeable batteries (usually for digital cameras) are deemed hazardous and need to be safely stored and brought to the Town's fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection program.

Underground Damage Prevention Program
Maine Law requires anyone using power tools to penetrate the ground (including Homeowners) to first:
  1. Pre-mark the boundaries of the proposed area of excavation with white markings.
  2. Call 1-888-DIGSAFE (1-888-344-7233) 3 business days prior to digging.  Dig Safe will then automatically notify all of its member utilities that own underground facilities in the area of the excavation so that they can mark their facilities.
  3. Notify all non-member owners of underground facilities in the area of the excavation 3 business days prior to digging. In Brunswick the Brunswick-Topsham Water District is not a member of Dig Safe and must be called directly at 729-9956. Public Works also operates underground facilities and requires a Street Opening Permit for any excavation in the right-of-way. FMI on non-member facility operators please visit the following website www.oktodig.com
Update on Street Sweeping
and Crosswalk Markings

Public Works has been busy sweeping all town streets since early April and asks everyone for patience as this is a long process, especially after the above average snowfall this past winter. Street sweeping of all town streets should be completed by mid-June.

On May 1st the town's street striping contractor, Pine State Safety Lines, Topsham began the annual repainting of all lane markings and crosswalks. The pavement marking work is expected to be completed by Memorial Day.

Disability Parking
Public Works has just started repainting the public parking areas and reminds all to observe the disability reserved parking spaces. State law sets the fine at $200 for improper parking in a disability reserved space, which includes the adjacent safety zone. Public Works has added a blue background to the space marking to help all quickly identify the space.

Household Hazardous
Waste Collection

Due to budget reductions Brunswick residents are not eligible this year to participate in the Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day to be held in Bath. Public Works has tentatively scheduled a Fall HHW Day for October 25, 2008 if the budget is approved by the Town Council for this event.

Cumberland St Project

New curb and sidewalk was recently constructed on Cumberland Street from Cushing Street to Mill Street. Work began in early November and Harry C. Crooker & Sons is doing the work under the direction of the Town Engineer.

Brunswick Trash Bag Availability
We occasionally get a call advising us certain local vendors are out of the special Brunswick trash bags and we are asked if the Town has any bags to sell. The Town does not have any bags to sell and we rely on the local vendors to order bags directly from the manufacturer and keep the bags in stock for their customers. One vendor, Wal-Mart, has stopped carrying the Brunswick bags and is currently negotiating with our Finance Department about special requirements they have to carry the bags. Until further notice, Wal-Mart is not offering the Brunswick trash bags for sale.

We have found that Shaw's and Hannaford's are usually well stocked and we remind all that Downeast Building Supply, Morning Glory Natural Foods, Bath Road Puffin Stop and, as of October 2007, both Brunswick Cumberland Farms Stores and Libby's Market on Jordan Ave are also carrying the Brunswick special trash bag. We can not waive the requirement to use the special trash bag so we ask for everyone's help by keeping an adequate supply on hand at home.
Landfill Closed on Mondays
The Graham Road Landfill is now permanently CLOSED on Mondays. The landfill will be open Tuesday thru Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:45 p.m. The reduced landfill hours from 6 days/week to 5 days/week was implemented to reduce operating costs as usage of the landfill has decreased over the last several years.

Please remember that residents must arrive by 3:45 p.m. to gain access to the landfill. Large loads (full pick up loads and larger) or commercial users must arrive by 3:30 p.m. so the vehicles can be unloaded and scaled out by 4:00 p.m.
