Winter Parking Rules
On street parking, except where signed otherwise, is allowed overnight and during the day in the wintertime on town streets unless a parking ban has been declared. Emergency parking bans are declared as needed when storms are forecast or winter operations require the bans. The parking bans are issued at least 6 hours before the ban is to take effect. Vehicles left on street during a parking ban will be ticketed and towed and the vehicle owner will be required to pay the fine and towing charges.
The local news media outlets (television and radio stations) will be notified of the ban and the town has a dedicated line to call to check to see if a parking ban has been declared (parking ban line is 725-0363). You may also subscribe to receive an email notification when a ban has been declared. FMI and to subscribe to parking ban notifications.
Top Things You Can Do to Help Public Works this Winter
-
When it snows please do not park your car in the street if at all possible. Please park in your driveway, well away from the curb or edge of pavement.
- Please do not shovel, plow or blow snow from your driveway out into the roadway. This creates a hazard for the traveling public and is prohibited by state law.
- When you do clear your driveway please do not plow or place snow in the public sidewalk area, especially if we have already cleared the sidewalk. We have over 34 miles of sidewalk to maintain. When we encounter large snow piles on the sidewalk it slows our ability considerably to get all walks timely cleared. Once we have cleared a sidewalk please do not place snow back in the sidewalk area as it then creates problems and a hazard for your neighbors and other pedestrians who attempt to use the walk.
- If we do damage your mailbox or post while plowing we ask you to attempt to make any needed repair on your own. We will certainly do our best to help if you are elderly or unable but we may not be able to send someone out to do the repair for several days. FMI on mailboxes.
- Please clear a place curbside for your trash and recycling and don't put your bags or cans on top of the snow banks. Our trash collectors have on average 800 stops per day to collect. Lifting a can off the top of a snow bank is an additional strain and potential injury for them. We want to collect your trash and recycling efficiently and safely and ask you to place your trash and recycling at ground level near the edge of the road to help our collectors work safe.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day a Success!!
The thirteenth annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day for residents was held on Saturday, October 17, 2009. Over 200 residents of Brunswick, Bath, Harpswell, Topsham, Bowdoin and West Bath came to the event delivering the equivalent of over 3,000 gallons of hazardous waste. Clean Harbors was on site to safely collect, consolidate and transport the hazardous waste to licensed disposal facilities.
If you have household hazardous waste material you need to dispose of now there is a facility at the City of Lewiston Transfer Station, 424 River Rd, that will accept such material on certain Saturdays. This is the Maine Environmental Depot facility and it is open from 8 am to noon only. The fee is $27 per disposal unit (a unit is 5 gal liquid or 20 pounds solid or a combo of these two amounts), payment by cash or check only. FMI on this facility you may call them during business hours at 786-7390 or visit their website at envdepot.com
Common Recycling Questions
The following is a list of answers to the most frequently asked recycling questions we receive:
- Plastic bags/plastic film. Plastic bags and any type of plastic film are not recyclable under our program. Several local supermarkets accept plastic bags for recycling.
- Driveway Sealer Container The plastic containers for driveway sealer are not recyclable due to the residue of sealer that remains in the container after use. Empty and dry driveway sealer containers must go in the trash after use of all product.
- Wood items of any type are not recyclable under our curbside program, especially the small wood crates containing clementines sold at the supermarkets. Small items may be put in your trash and wood items are accepted for recycling at the landfill (there is a disposal charge).
- Dog and cat food bags are not recyclable. They contain a film liner that makes them unacceptable under our current program. Please put these bags in the trash.
- Please put recyclables in your blue box, a similar type container or a trash can providing it is clearly labeled as containing recycling. Recyclable items in plastic bags will not be collected as the plastic bag is not recyclable.
- Styrofoam type materials are not recyclable even if they are stamped with the recycling chasing arrow symbol and number. Please put styrofoam items (including meat trays, certain coffee cups, preformed packaging pieces) in your trash.
- Only metal cans are recyclable under our curbside program. If you have other metal items (appliances, car parts, curtain rods, metal lawn chairs, etc.) they can only be recycled at the landfill (there is a disposal charge).
- Only plastic "containers" are recyclable under our curbside program. If you have plastic toys, plastic chairs or other plastic items they are not recyclable at this time and you can either put them in your trash or donate them to a local charity.
- Only glass jars are recyclable under our program. If you have window glass, mirrors, dishes, etc., they will have to be disposed of at our landfill (disposal charge will apply).
- Clothing items are not recyclable under our program. We recommend you give your clothing to Goodwill or charitable agency of your choice. Clothing may be disposed of at our landfill (disposal charge will apply).
- Fluorescent Tubes (4 foot, 8 foot and circular) contain mercury and may not be put in either the recycling or trash. Residents may bring fluoresent tubes to the Graham Road Landfill and they will be accepted from residents at no charge. The tubes are set aside for recycling so please keep them separate from other items and handle them carefully so they do not break.
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL's) contain mercury and may not be put in either the recycling or trash. A few local stores will accept only the CFL bulbs for recycling (they don't accept fluorescent tubes). FMI visit the www.efficiencymaine.com website for a complete listing of local stores in Maine. The following stores in Brunswick will accept Compact Fluorescent Bulbs from residents for recycling:
- Downeast Building Supply, 18 Spring St.
- F.W. Horch, 56 Maine St.
- Hancock Lumber, 158 Church Rd.
- Batteries must be disposed of based on the type:
- Rechargeable batteries must be recycled and not put in the trash. Brunswick has drop off boxes for rechargeable batteries at the landfill, Town Hall, Public Works and the library.
- Flashlight batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9 volt, alkaline or non-alkaline) may be put in the trash. Years ago they contained mercury but that has long been discontinued in their manufacture and they may be safely put in the trash.
- Button batteries are deemed hazardous and need to be safely stored and brought to the Town's fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection program.
- Special lithium ion non-rechargeable batteries (usually for digital cameras) are deemed hazardous and need to be safely stored and brought to the Town's fall Household Hazardous Waste Collection program.

Map Locating Landfill/Public Works Office
Public Works maintains a page on Facebook. For updates on work in progress please visit us on Facebook.
Maine Street Station Station Avenue Open to Traffic
The new public road in the Maine Street Station development, called Station Avenue, is now open for public use. The road accommodates two way traffic between Maine Street and Union Street. All traffic must turn right when exiting Station Avenue at Maine Street.
On street parking consists of 34 angle parking spaces and 13 parallel parking spaces as well as a bus stop and an elevated crosswalk area where goods and passengers can be dropped off or picked up. The angle parking spaces require users to back-in to the parking stall and this type parking has been selected to promote safety as well as traffic calming. FMI information about the back-in angle parking we have prepared a brochure that more fully explains this type parking and its advantages.
Brunswick Trash Bag Availability
We occasionally get a call advising us certain local vendors are out of the special Brunswick trash bags and we are asked if the Town has any bags to sell. The Town does not have any bags to sell and we rely on the local vendors to order bags directly from the manufacturer and keep the bags in stock for their customers. One vendor, Wal-Mart, has stopped carrying the Brunswick bags and is currently negotiating with our Finance Department about special requirements they have to carry the bags. Until further notice, Wal-Mart is not offering the Brunswick trash bags for sale.
We have found that Shaw's and Hannaford's are usually well stocked and we remind all that Downeast Building Supply, Morning Glory Natural Foods, Bath Road Puffin Stop and, as of October 2007, both Brunswick Cumberland Farms Stores and Libby's Market on Jordan Ave are also carrying the Brunswick special trash bag. We can not waive the requirement to use the special trash bag so we ask for everyone's help by keeping an adequate supply on hand at home.
Landfill Closed on Mondays
The Graham Road Landfill is now permanently CLOSED on Mondays. The landfill will be open Tuesday thru Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The reduced landfill hours from 6 days/week to 5 days/week was implemented to reduce operating costs as usage of the landfill has decreased over the last several years.
Please remember that residents must arrive by 3:30 p.m. to gain access to the landfill. All vehicles must be unloaded and scaled out by 4:00 p.m.
Maine Law requires anyone using power tools to penetrate the ground (including Homeowners) to first:
-
Pre-mark the boundaries of the proposed area of excavation with white markings.
-
Call
1-888-DIGSAFE (1-888-344-7233) 3 business days prior to digging. Dig Safe will then automatically notify all of its member utilities that own underground facilities in the area of the excavation so that they can mark their facilities.
-
Notify all non-member owners of underground facilities in the area of the excavation 3 business days prior to digging. In Brunswick the Brunswick-Topsham Water District is not a member of Dig Safe and must be called directly at 729-9956. Public Works also operates underground facilities and requires a Street Opening Permit for any excavation in the right-of-way. FMI on non-member facility operators please visit the following website www.oktodig.com
