Guidelines for Residential Curbside Collection
GENERAL
- Please put your recyclable items in a separate location
away from your refuse. We recommend you put your recyclable
items on one side of your driveway at the curb and put your
refuse on the other side. Two distinct locations for these
items will avoid missed collections and ensure efficient
service.
- Place your recyclables and refuse at the curb line or
edge of shoulder. Items not at curb side or at the edge of
the roadway will not be collected.
- Please help us by recycling as much as you can -
recyclable items in with your refuse may result in a
reminder note from our driver.
- Place your refuse and recyclables curbside by 7:00 a.m.
on collection day - some days we have extra crews or reverse
the routes so please have your material out early.
REFUSE
Only normal household refuse is collected curbside
(food waste, nonrecyclable packaging and containers, waste paper products, waste plastic, etc.). Refuse must be in
sealed bags (maximum 32 gallon size limit) or containers (containers must
be in sound condition, no sharp edges, and have handles -
please do not overload, we have a 40 lb maximum weight limit and
no container is to exceed 32 gallons in size.
Refuse in paper bags or loose will not be collected. By
ordinance we may collect only four 32 gallon bags weekly per
residence. We can not accept the following type items for
curbside collection (they must be taken to the Graham Road
Landfill):
- Ashes
- Furniture
- Tires (@ $2/each)
- Mattresses
- Refrigerators/Appliances
- Area Rugs
- Metal Items
The above items are accepted at the Graham Road
Landfill from a resident (with a current Residential Permit,
$5/year). The $80/ton tipping fee applies to the above items (minimum charge is $5 for up to 200 lbs).
The following items are also not collected curbside and
may be taken to the Graham Road Landfill where the current
tipping fee (as of July 1, 2004: $80/ton, $5 minimum charge for 200 lbs or less)
will be charged for disposal.

absorbent material such as Speedy-Dri or kitty litter to
solidify liquid waste.)
RECYCLABLES
Presently the following items are collected curbside
(please don't include other items):
- Clear glass jars (rinse clean, discard lids, try
to remove labels).
- Newspaper Mix (one item):
- Newspapers (including all inserts)
- Magazines
- Catalogues
- Telephone Books
- Paperback Books (with covers removed)
- Tinned cans (rinse clean, try to remove labels)
- #2 HDPE Plastic containers (rinse clean, discard
lids)
- Brown Corrugated Cardboard (flatten, discard
packing materials, brown paper bags are okay)
For proper collection put your recyclables curbside as
follows:
- Use your blue box for only one of the above items.
All other recyclable items must be in separate
containers or bundles (for additional items we
recommend you use brown paper bags as we can
include these bags in with the corrugated
cardboard after we empty the item). If you use
other containers for recyclables we will provide
you with a free "Recycle It" sticker to
permanently label the container.
- Don't mix your recyclables together - keep them
separated.
- Please be sure to flatten your brown corrugated
cardboard - our 5 bin collection truck has limited
room and we are unable to collect cardboard items
if they are not broken down.
- Residents are requested to place the newspaper mix
curbside for collection as one recyclable item.
Do not bundle and tie the magazines or catalogues;
include these items with your newspapers. Magazines
and catalogues may be glossy or non-glossy and
can be stapled or glued.
Adhere to our material preparation requirements.
Frequent recyclable contaminations problems we have are:
- Newspapers: string used to tie is a contaminate, we
suggest you use a brown paper bag to bundle.
- Brown Corrugated Cardboard: grey paperboard (like
cereal boxes) or non corrugated brownboard (e.g.,
beverage cartons) are included.
- #2HDPE: Lids not removed (they are a different
type plastic), plastic film (bags) even if #2 can
not be included - be sure to check the bottom of
the container for the 2 inside the chasing arrow
symbol. Also, motor oil or anti-freeze in #2
containers is not acceptable as the residue
is a contaminant - discard such containers.
- Clear glass jars: window glass, plate glass,
green, brown, ceramic, lab glass or dishware
glasses are not acceptable material under this
item - remember, only JARS.
- Tinned Cans: Do not include other metal items
with tinned cans, aluminum cans are not acceptable
- we recommend you make sure the can will attract
a magnet before you include it in this category.
For those residents who may have accumulated a
large number of magazines, catalogues or paperbacks, please
do not place them curbside. Bring your accumulated
materials to the Drop-Off Center at Public Works, 9 Industry Road.
