How to Safely Disposal of Sharps (Needles & Syringes) from Home Healthcare
Keep it Simple.NEVER put your sharps in your curbside trash. Follow these simple steps to safely dispose sharps. If you don't have access to a sharps return program, there are many household products that come in containers ideal for sharps disposal. The main requirements are a puncture-resistant material and an opening that can be easily and tightly sealed. Some choices:
Liquid laundry detergent bottles.
Coffee cans (with a hole cut in the plastic top for sharps insertion).
Bleach bottles.
Wet wipe canisters.
Large shampoo bottles.
Label It. Label your sharps container "Used Medical Sharps - Do Not Recycle" with a waterproof marker so everyone who comes in contact with it will handle it accordingly. Keep it Close. Put it where you'll use it - right away. If you take insulin in several spots around the house, have several containers on hand. Never leave a needle or syringe laying around for later disposal. Seal it Tight. When your container is full, put the top on tightly and seal it completely with duct tape or another heavy-duty tape. Properly Dispose of the Container. Take your used sealed medical sharps container to the Graham Rd Landfill and put the container directly into the waste disposal area (not the recycling area). Please don't put your sharps container in your curbside trash.
Thank you for doing your part and properly disposing of your sharps!!
