FREEPORT
— A two-alarm fire decimated three potential living spaces for an elderly
Freeport woman early Monday morning, according to the town's fire chief.
The house, mobile home and RV camper of Lottie Arnold Miller, 76, were destroyed
by a blaze reported at 12:13 a.m. Monday. All the structures were situated near
one another on a piece of property at 21 Lunt Road, said Freeport Fire Chief
Darrel Fournier.
"The homeowner has no insurance, which even makes it more tragic," said
Fournier. "We're going to try and work as a town to see if there's some
assistance we can bring to the family. We're trying to get a plan together at
this point."
The chief said that the cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is
believed to be "accidental," said Fournier. Firefighters from Brunswick, Durham,
Yarmouth and Pownal assisted at the scene.
"There was an older home, and at the time they did not have any electricity in
it because they were using it as storage," said Fournier. "There was about two
feet between the older home and the mobile home. The fire did extend into the
mobile home, as well as to an RV camper that was parked outside the home used
for storage. The camper was a total loss, the storage home was completely
destroyed, and I'd say the trailer was damaged badly as well."
The fire made for a long weekend for area firefighters, and not because of the
Memorial Day parades. Friday afternoon, Yarmouth and Brunswick fire personnel
joined Freeport's team to fight a kitchen fire at 21 Unity Lane off Varney Road.
Deputy Fire Chief Paul Conley said today the stove fire caused about $10,000
damage. Later that night, Freeport's fire department was called to assist the
neighboring Pownal firefighters, who were working to subdue a two-car garage
fire that "was fully-involved" by the time of Freeport's arrival at about 9 p.m.
"We assisted them on a garage fire that was attached to a residence," said
Fournier about the Woodland Road blaze. "They had quite a bit of smoke through
the rest of the residence, but we were able to save the house."
