BE SAFE...CLEAN IT UP

In our country, a home is damaged by fire 120 times a day because of trash or clutter. The Brunswick Fire Department reminds you that you can prevent a fire in your home by keeping it free of rubbish.

Check your furnace, heater and chimney and have them cleaned once a year by a professional. Keep litter, trash, clothing and paper at least three feet from your heating system. Don't collect debris around the yard. Get rid of leaves. Store combustibles (gasoline, kerosene, solvents, paint thinners. etc.) outside in appropriate labeled containers. Keep them in metal cabinets that can be locked.

Clean out garages and storage areas, throwaway old magazines and newspapers and empty garbage regularly.

Obtain a permit from the Fire Department before burning leaves or brush and make sure you burn small piles. Do not burn if it is windy. Supervise the burning at all times. Keep a portable fire extinguisher and charged hose nearby. When finished wet down the ashes to make sure they are out.
