The Hazmat Team has its own Chief, Assistant Chief, Captain and Lieutenant. They are paged out through pagers and cell phones to respond to all Hazmat and WMD incidents that arise. The response area for the Midcoast Hazmat team is the Northern portion of Cumberland County, Sagadahoc County, Lincoln County, and the town of Lisbon. As a State of Maine Response team, response to anywhere in the State of Maine or the neighboring States is possible.
The key to having a capable and well equipped Hazamt/WMD team is constant training, and upgrades of information and equipment. The team is actively searching out new training and equipment to maintain a very high level of response capability for our region and the State. We feel it is our job to be ready for anything that might come our way.
With the help of Homeland Security Grant funding, we placed into service a new 38 foot Hazardous Materials Response vehicle. This vehicle allows us access to all of the needed equipment. Upgrading from an older 24 foot trailer which needed to be towed to any incident was only one of the benefits. Before, we had to pick and choose what was put on the trailer, and stack it high and tight to make it all fit. Now we can load all of the necessary equipment aboard our new truck, HAZMAT 4.
The Hazmat Team meets each month on the second Monday from 1730 - 19:00 hours. In addition, they meet for training and various seminars throughout the month.
