Codes Enforcement Division - Permits

The Brunswick Codes Enforcement Office uses the following sources as guidelines and references when enforcing the Building, Electrical and Plumbing Regulations for the Town of Brunswick

  • 1990 B.O.C.A. National Building Code (As Amended)

  • 1989 C.A.B.O. One - and Two Family Dwelling Code

  • 1986 A.N.S.I. A117.1

  • 1990 N.R.P.A. 101 Life Safety Code (As Amended)

  • Maine State Internal Plumbing Code (Based on the 2000 Uniform Plumbing Code)

  • 1990 B.O.C.A. National Fire Protection Code (As Amended)

  • 1990 N.F.P.A. 70 National Electric Code (As Amended)

Building Permits

A Building Permit is required when a building is constructed, demolished, moved, added to or structurally altered. Any building permit application shall be accompanied by plans drawn to scale, a plot plan and a cross section. Please allow 7 to 10 working days to receive approval of the building permit.

A Building Permit shall expire if the work or change is not commenced within 1 year of the date on which the permit is granted and if the work or change is not completed within 2 years of the date on which the permit is granted.

Electrical Permits

An Electrical Permit is required whenever electrical work is done. A licensed State of Maine Electrician must do the work unless it is completed by the homeowner occupying the building.

Plumbing Permits

Plumbing Permits are required for any plumbing work done to a structure. A licensed State of Maine Plumber must do the work unless it is completed by the homeowner occupying the building.

Sign Permits

Sign Permits are required for any new or replacement Sign in the Town of Brunswick. Please allow 7 to 10 working days to receive approval of a Sign Permit.

Change of Use Permit

A Change of Use Permit is required when there is a change from one use to another use of any structure or portion thereof, which is permitted in a particular zoning district.
