Vernal Pool Complex

A key feature of the 40+ acre conservation land parcel conveyed by the Sandelin Family as part of the Julia's Way Subdivision on Bunganuc Road is a large vernal pool complex located high on a ridge line in the western portion of the site.   This pool supports the highest concentration of breeding salamanders documented to date in Brunswick.  The broad sphagnum mats associated with the pool also support an interesting assemblage of orchids and sedges throughout the growing season.

Unfragmented Forest

Habitat fragmentation resulting from poorly planned development gradually erodes the ability of Brunswick’s rural areas to support species that require large home ranges or are otherwise sensitive to disturbance.  If we want to maintain habitat opportunity for species such as bobcat, fisher, scarlet tanager, and wood thrush; and if we want to maintain traditional natural resource industries and recreational opportunities such as forestry and hunting, then we will need to actively monitor the ongoing trend of block fragmentation.  The conservation land set aside as part of the Julia's Way subdivision is part of a 200 acre unfragmented block in south western  Brunswick.
