mere point village conservation Land

Pitch Pine Heath Barren Community
Land developed as Section I of the Mere Point Village Subdivision consists primarily of Oak-Pine Forest[1] community type, but also includes an intact Pitch Pine-Heath Barren. The Pitch Pine-Heath Barren is ranked S1 (critically imperiled) by the Maine Natural Areas Program (MNAP). During development review the Planning Department consulted with MNAP who indicated that this occurrence would be considered of statewide significance. As a result, Downeast Energy designed their project to avoid the most intact portion of this stand and included it in designated conservation land that was offered to the Town.

Vernal Pool Complex
A small Leatherleaf Boggy Fen occurs to the west of Mere Point Village Lot 5 and extends outside of the area designated as Section 1. This wetland includes a central vernal pool complex used by breeding wood frogs (Rana sylvatica), and spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum). Downeast Energy has included this wetland and a buffer in the conveyance to the Town of Brunswick.
