VILLAGE REVIEW BOARD
PLANS HISTORIC PRESERVATION MONTH ACTIVITIES
The
Brunswick Village Review Board is planning a series of activities in
observance of National Historic Preservation Month.
This year’s activities will explore the theme “
Brunswick
Transportation: Past &
Present.” The slate of
activities includes a photo contest on display at the Curtis Memorial
Library throughout the month of May, as well as a walking tour of the
northwest
Brunswick
neighborhood, a roundtable discussion on the future of transportation in
Brunswick
, and a Historic Brunswick Bike Ride, co-sponsored by the Brunswick
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.
Activities begin on Saturday, May 5, at 10 a.m., with a
walking tour of the Northwest Brunswick neighborhood led by Northwest
Brunswick Neighborhood Coalition member and long-time
Brunswick
resident Jim Burbank. The tour
will begin outside
11 Cumberland Street
and will go through much of the downtown historic district, with Mr.
Burbank discussing the history and sharing reminiscences of various
downtown buildings and institutions. The
tour will end at the recently-renovated
Swinging
Bridge
, a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places.
Village Review Board member Janet Roberts, who also served on the
committee exploring the feasibility of renovating the bridge, will speak
briefly about the renovation process.
Events continue on Wednesday, May 9,
with “Future
Multi-Modal Transportation Facilities for
Brunswick
: a Roundtable Discussion.”
Panelists will include Kirk
F. Mohney

author of Along the Rails: A
Survey of Maine’s Historic Railroad Buildings; Brunswick
transportation advocate and historian Chris Gutscher; Tracy Perez,
Director of the Office of Planning & Policy for Passenger
Transportation at the Maine Department of Transportation; and a Bicycle
Coalition representative. The
program is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Morrell Meeting Room
of the Curtis Memorial Library, and attendees are invited to share
their ideas and expertise on
Brunswick
’s transportation future.
Next comes a bike ride
co-sponsored by the Brunswick
Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee that will take riders past
historic structures throughout the town.
The ride, scheduled for Saturday, June 2, will include both
a longer loop and a shorter loop for families with small children or those
seeking a less challenging ride, and will include commentary on the
historic structures along the route. The
ride will depart at 2 p.m. from the
Old
Brunswick
High School
on Spring Street.
Historic Preservation Month activities also include a
Photo Contest on display in the west entryway of the Curtis Memorial
Library May 4-25. The
contest, sponsored by the Village Review Board in conjunction with the
Brunswick Department of Recreation and the Times Record, will
include photos that advance the theme “
Brunswick
Transportation: Past &
Present.” Entries
are due May 3. Entry forms may
be obtained at the
Brunswick
Recreation
