Special Response Team
The specially-equipped and highly-trained personnel of the Brunswick Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) strives to bring a successful conclusion to high-risk situations while minimizing the risk of harm to the citizens of our community, law enforcement personnel, and suspects. The unit is prepared to assume full control of specific tactical situations which, by nature, would be considered excessively dangerous and complex, requiring the use of a specialized team effort, rather than independent action by individual officers.
Responding to sensitive, potentially life-threatening situations and resolving them in as peaceful a manner as possible requires a great deal of training and readiness. Such situations may include high-risk search and arrest warrant service, hostage rescue, and building searches for dangerous suspects.
Personnel
The SRT consists of a:
- Team Commander
- Team Leader
- Assistant Team Leader
- Marksmen
- Entry Personnel
- Perimeter Personnel
The Brunswick Police Department also maintains trained hostage/crisis negotiators in a separately assigned function.
Qualifications
The members of the SRT are assigned to different divisions of the Department as their primary duty assignment. The SRT is a secondary assignment for which all team members must pass a bi-annual physical agility test and firearms proficiency qualification course, both of which are at a higher standard than that of regular police department requirements.
Officers wishing to apply to SRT must be extremely experienced in law enforcement, demonstrate excellent job skills prior to their selection to the team, pass the physical fitness test and firearms qualification course, and successfully pass an oral review board, held by all current members of the team. All team members are volunteers and are on call twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
